چکیده

Spatially-resolved high-resolution long-slit spectra of Betelgeuse’s circumstellar shell are described for a spectral window centered on the 7699Å resonance line of neutral potassium. The K i emission from resonance fluorescent scattering of photospheric photons which is mapped out to 50 arcsec from the star is approximately spherically symmetric with a brightness decreasing as r, where r is the radial distance from the star. Our measurements together with the earlier theoretical interpretation by Rodgers & Glassgold suggest that the mass loss rate is about 2 ×10 M⊙ y . The K i emission is far from homogeneous: intensity inhomogeneities are seen down to the seeing limit of about 1 arcsec and the velocity resolution of about 2 km s. There is clear evidence for a thin shell of 50 arcsec radius. This is identified with the weaker circumstellar absorption component known as S2. Estimates are made of the density of K atoms in this shell (≃ 6× 10 cm).

Infrared Spectra and Visibilities as Probes of the Outer Atmospheres of Red Supergiant Stars

In the light of the recent results of the stellar interferometry, we examine the nature of the extra molecular layer outside the photosphere of red supergiant stars, so far studied mostly with the use of the infrared spectra. Although the visibility data are more direct probes of the spatial structure of the outer atmosphere, it is essential that they are analyzed in combination with the spectr...

Spatially Resolved STIS Spectroscopy of Betelgeuse ’ s Outer Atmosphere

We present spatially resolved spectra observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope of the upper chromosphere and dust envelope of α Orionis (M2 Iab). In the fall of 2002 a set of five high-resolution near-UV spectra was obtained by scanning at intensity peak-up position and four off-limb target positions up to one arcsecond, using a small aperture (200 by...

Water in Emission in the Iso Spectrum of the Early M Supergiant Star Μ Cephei

We report a detection of water in emission in the spectrum of the M2 supergiant star μ Cep (M2Ia) observed by the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) aboard Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and now released as the ISO Archives. The emission first appears in the 6 μm region (ν2 fundamental bands), and then in the 40 μm region (pure rotation lines) despite the rather strong dust emission. The int...

Spatially extended K i λ 7699 emission in the nebula of VY CMa : Kinematics and geometry

Long-slit echelle spectra reveal bright extended emission from the K i λ7699 resonance line in the reflection nebula surrounding the extreme red supergiant VY Canis Majoris. The central star has long been known for its unusually-bright K i emission lines, but this is the first report of intrinsic emission from K i in the nebula. The extended emission is not just a reflected spectrum of the star...

Interferometric observations of the supergiant stars α Orionis and α Herculis with FLUOR at IOTA⋆

We report the observations in the K band of the red supergiant star α Orionis and of the bright giant star α Herculis with the FLUOR beamcombiner at the IOTA interferometer. The high quality of the data allows us to estimate limb-darkening and derive precise diameters in the K band which combined with bolometric fluxes yield effective temperatures. In the case of Betelgeuse, data collected at h...
